Joash became king when he was just 7 years old. Thanks to his spiritual father and adviser Jehoiada, Joash was known as one of the good kings of Judah. Joash listened to Jehoiada and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm” (Prov 13:20). Christians need mentors in the faith who can help them grow in Christ and serve God’s work with them.
Joash and Jehoiada reformed the nation from its ungodly worship practices and repaired the temple of God. To repair the temple, Joash ordered the offering collection. But the priests mismanaged the collected money and could not repair the temple for a long time. Joash and Jehoiada resolved it by collecting the offering in a box at the temple and giving the money directly to the temple renovators. The honest and devoted workers repaired the temple completely. To repair what is broken in our heart-temple, our family, or our ministry is to be our vital concern. Instead of observing the ruin with an attitude of defeat, we are to resolve to repair it.
After Jehoiada died, Joash listened to wicked officials and fell into idol worship (2 Ch. 24:17-19). He was attacked by enemies and assassinated. Joash started well but failed to finish well.
Application: Lord, restore our heart, our family, and our church through our spiritual restoration work.
One Word: Repair the temple first
