The son of King Jeroboam, Abijah, became ill. So, Jeroboam told his wife to disguise herself and seek out the prophet Ahijah to discover what would happen to the boy. Jeroboam trusted Ahijah, as he was the one who prophesied Jeroboam would become king. Although Ahijah was blind, the Lord helped him to see through her disguise. Ahijah sent Jeroboam’s wife back home with two disastrous prophecies. First was the disaster God would bring on the house of Jeroboam. God raised Jeroboam up and gave him much of David’s kingdom. But Jeroboam was no David. His sin of idolatry caused God to turn his back on Jeroboam. God would cut off every male in the house of Jeroboam.
The second prophesy was about the death of Jeroboam’s son. Ahijah told Jeroboam’s wife that their son would die as soon as she stepped across the threshold of her house. As soon as she stepped across the threshold, the boy died. It seemed like very dark times for Israel’s future. But God promised that he would raise up a king of Israel who would be zealous for him. Even in the midst of judgment, there is always hope in God.
