God raised up three adversaries in response to Solomon’s idolatry: Hadad the Edomite, Rezon son of Eliada, and Jeroboam son of Nebat. Eventually, the nation would be torn apart as prophesied by the prophet Ahijah. Ten tribes would go to Jeroboam, while Solomon’s son would retain one tribe of Judah. The prophet also extended God’s promise to Jeroboam, the future rebel, that if he walked in obedience to the Lord, God would be with him and build an enduring dynasty.
Solomon was wise, but he ended his reign making the wrong choices. God would humble David’s descendants because of him. Our greatest enemy and downfall are often our lack of humility. We should acknowledge that God is much greater than our own ideas of greatness. Adversity is not always punishment but a hope for redeeming grace.
Application: Lord, help me to humbly repent of my own pride and greed. You always leave a door open for your redeeming grace.
One Word: Be humble before God
