In the first half of his reign, Solomon accomplished everything he set his heart to do. God then appeared to him again. He reminded Solomon: It’s important to faithfully live before God with integrity of heart and uprightness. If Solomon didn’t stay faithful to God, all the glory and splendor of Solomon’s achievements, including the temple, could turn to rubble and become a byword to the nations.
Solomon’s other activities recorded here include his dealings with Hiram, the king of Tyre, and his use of slave labor, which were his means of wealth and empire building. While Solomon fulfilled the temple obligations, his heart became geared more toward his own desire for wealth and glory. He did not continue to live with integrity of heart—and, as a result, his gains would be temporary. Fortunately, God’s love and mercy outlive kings and temples. Jesus showed the way to God’s kingdom, which will last for eternity.
Application: Lord, help me to be deeply rooted in your love and not set my heart on money and other deceptive and fleeting idols.
One Word: Faithfully walk with God
