Solomon continues his prayer in the dedication of the temple. He recognizes that God’s reach is not limited to the nation of Israel—but he is God of the foreigners, immigrants, and refugees who also come to him in prayer. This reflects God’s heart for people of all nations. God welcomes all who are seeking refuge and mercy. God’s love should not make us feel superior and separate us from outsiders. Rather, God’s love should enable us to welcome the outcast and share it with all who are in need.
God is the God of forgiveness and restoration. When we sin or turn our backs on the love of God, we may find ourselves overcome by the consequences of our sin, held captive by powers beyond our control. When we cry out to God for help, he hears us and is willing and able to help us. When we recognize our limitations, God is merciful. He gives us rest, and there is nothing that can separate us from his grace and love for us. In his love, we can find true joy, thanksgiving, and belonging.
Application: Lord, thank you for welcoming us to your presence and hearing us in our time of need. You are our refuge and redeemer from sin and strife.
One Word: God hears us when we cry out to him
