These verses describe the building of Solomon’s temple and the furnishing inside of the temple. We also get a glimpse of Solomon’s unfortunate slip in his spiritual condition.
The palace Solomon had built for himself and his queen (Pharaoh’s daughter of Egypt) was massive and beautiful. The Palace of the Forest of Lebanon dominated the Jerusalem landscape. It took twice as long to build as the temple did (13 years for the palace versus seven for the temple). The palace had a series of buildings, including a separate palace for his wife. Its size and complexity and Solomon’s marriage to Pharoah’s daughter were troubling signs for where Solomon was spiritually. Solomon was double-minded. One cannot serve both God and anything or anyone else.
Solomon brought from Tyre a man named Huram, whose mother was a Jew. It was his mission to complete the furnishings of the temple. He made elaborate bronze pillars for the temple, the Sea (a very large pool) which rested on twelve bulls, and many instruments of worship. They included cups, sprinkling bowls, and shovels for the temple. When everything was completed, Solomon brought in all the things his father David had dedicated, bringing together new and old treasures.
Application: Father, help us so that we may be single-mindedly devoted to you.
One Word: Don’t be double minded
