The Lord instructed Ezekiel to take up a lament concerning Tyre. Tyre was like a beautiful ship, made of the choicest materials. Indeed, the city of Tyre was famous for her seafaring abilities, trading with all nations, becoming the example of the ancient merchant society. According to verse 11, the nations served to bring Tyre’s splendor and beauty to perfection. In verses 12-24 we see the list of nations who traded with Tyre. All the Mediterranean nations, Asia Minor and even Africa exchanged goods with Tyre, until Tyre became overflowing with honor and prosperity in every way.
In spite of her prominence, Tyre was not exempt from the Lord’s judgment. The “east wind” in verse 25 represents God’s judgment. When God judged Tyre, it was like a tragic shipwreck. The nations were all lamented at her fall. (32) Tyre had prospered for centuries, but when she sought to profit from God’s judgment on Israel, the Lord judged Tyre harshly. God is patient, but in time he judges sin.
Application: Lord, help me not to be a self-seeking person in this world. Help me to be a God-seeking person, a source of joy—not of lament.
One Word: Seek God, be a source of joy
