Ezekiel prophesied at the time when the Jewish people were exiled to Babylon. At such a time, Ezekiel testified to God who was the sovereign judge over all nations. In chapter 26, Ezekiel prophesied against Tyre. They wanted to take advantage of Israel’s fall and prosper at their expense. The Lord promised to bring many nations against Tyre. (3-6) God promised to ravage their land at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian armies. (6-14) He is the Sovereign Lord. The fall of Israel was not an opportunity, it was the judgment by which the Lord had spoken.
What word did the Sovereign Lord speak against Tyre? The city of Tyre was a proud coastal city, but the Lord would make all nations lament with terror because of his judgment. The Lord would make Tyre desolate and barren. The Lord was judging sin—the sin of his people, but also the sin of the nations. Tyre wanted to profit from Israel’s demise, but the Lord judged their sin and brought them to a horrible end.
Application: Lord, you are Sovereign over all things. Help me to listen when you speak.
