When Jonathan saw David’s courageous faith in God and his passion for God, he became one in spirit with David and loved him as himself. He did not see David as his rival but made a covenant with David. Jonathan’s friendship was loyal and genuine to the end. Their friendship in God was possible, for both of them loved and honored God. However, Saul’s pride made him fearful that he would lose his kingdom, and his former love for David turned to hatred. Saul sent David on many dangerous military campaigns, but David had great success in everything. It was because the LORD was with David. As a result, all Israel and Judah loved him.
When the Spirit of the LORD left Saul, he began to be tormented by an evil spirit. In his murderous spirit he hurled a spear at David but missed. Then, he plotted to trap David with a promise of marriage to Michal. Saul thought that the Philistines would kill David. But David killed 200 Philistines and brought the full price to Saul. When the LORD was with him, David was able to conduct himself wisely, and his military campaigns were successful.
