Saul was a Benjamite young man from a wealthy family, exceptionally tall and handsome (2). He went all the way through the hill country looking for his father’s lost donkey. When he traveled roughly 24 miles and still did not find the donkey (4), he decided to see Samuel who was in a nearby town to ask for an insight (6).
It did not all happen at random. This was God’s plan to bring Saul to Samuel since Saul was the one God chose to be Israel’s first king (16). Saul was the kind of king the Israelites had pictured in their minds. He had the physical appearance of a king; he took responsibility for his father’s property and went through the trouble of traveling as far as he did. Also, he was willing to hear his servant’s advice to seek the man of God (5). These were all the human qualities of a king. The Israelites angered God as they asked for a king. Yet, God did not leave them. God was merciful to the Israelites and wanted to give the people a chance to work with a king who looked perfect in their eyes. He also set hope for Saul to deliver his people from the Philistines.
God does not stop loving his people. He always provides for us, hoping we make the right choice and obey his will.
