This passage lists the lands conquered during the time of Moses and during the time of Joshua. Now Joshua had grown old, but the Lord said to him that there were still large areas of land to be taken. The land still remaining to be taken were the regions of the Philistines, from the Shihor River east of Egypt, to the territory of Ekron in the north and so forth.
Nine and a half tribes had received their portions. There were descriptions of the land the half tribe of Manasseh, the Reubenites, and the Gadites had received. However, the tribe of Levi had no inheritance. God and the heavenly kingdom were their inheritance. They did not put their hopes on this earth. Rather, their hope and inheritance were already in heaven. The Lord was their inheritance. They had the greatest inheritance, which was God himself.
Are we looking for land, security, money and fame in this world? Are we trying to leave our name on this earth or in heaven? God made it clear through the lives of the Levites that the ultimate inheritance is God himself. May God help us to put our hope in God and have him as our ultimate inheritance rather than the riches of this world.
Application: Lord, you are our inheritance. May we put our hope in you
One Word: The Lord is our inheritance.
