Jesus says we are to be like servants waiting for our master's arrival, protectors of his household, and good and faithful managers of his people. With this analogy, we should always be ready and watchful. After Jesus' death and resurrection, he said he would come again. We must be watchful not just for some cataclysmic events but also for the work of the Holy Spirit every moment of our lives. God reveals himself, his wisdom, his mercy through everyday experiences if only we recognize it and welcome it. This is not for his good, but for our good.
We can be watchful through prayer, in reading or writing, sometimes just being present and mindful in our day to day lives. God also gives opportunities to serve others, make meaningful contributions to our household and community, to utilize our God-given gifts towards advancing his kingdom. We need to watch out for all the things that distract, tempt, and cause us to do evil to ourselves and to others. We should not squander our lives which God gave us the privilege to live and find joy in. We can do this when we know our lives are not meaningless but find true purpose in our Father, Lord, and Savior God.
Application: Lord, help me to have the attitude of your servant, waiting for your coming, welcoming your grace and truth, and responsibly caring for your household.
One Word: Keep your lamp burning.
