1. The Lord has given you the land (19-25)
When the people reached the hill country of the Amorites, Moses instructed them that it was the Lord who had given them the land. But he also warned them, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." They sent spies to explore everything, and their report was encouraging: "It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us."
2. You rebelled against the Lord (26-46)
God's command was to take possession of the land; the people's response was rebellion. With their eyes they saw what looked like insurmountable obstacles-the size and strength of the people and their cities-and they lost sight of the Lord of heaven and earth who had called them. They surrendered to their fear instead of their Lord. They would not inherit the land, but die in the desert. When they attempted to correct their own sin they rebelled yet again. Only the Lord can deal with sin. We must trust him and his command.
