1. A noble task (1-7)
An overseer has a noble task. He is a shepherd of God's flock. Primarily, he must demonstrate that he can oversee his own life before God. He should also be a faithful husband and father in his family before taking on the greater responsibility of a leader in God's house. He should not pursue a leadership position out of pride or conceit but rather to humbly serve God's people. An overseer should be mature in their faith and reputable both inside and outside the church. This brings God glory.
2. Those who serve well (8-13)
Deacons are men and women called to be servants of those within the church. They are to be worthy of respect, living faithful lives in their homes, in the church, and before God. Those who serve well in their capacity as leaders and servants of God's people receive a spiritual reward. Not only do they gain excellent standing in this life, but they grow in the eternal hope of God and the assurance of their faith.
Application: Lord, raise up stewards of the word of God and the work of God, those who can serve God's people in the image of Christ.
One Word: A leader who serves God's flock
