1. A king's prideful and unwise response (1-15)
Solomon's many accomplishments came at a heavy cost to the people. When Rehoboam became king, the people requested that their harsh labor and heavy load be lightened. The elders advised Rehoboam to grant their request, but the new king rejected it. He turned to the counsel of his young, ambitious, and proud companions. They fed Rehoboam's desires to show his strength, consolidate his power, and make his own name. The king told Jeroboam and the people he would make their yoke heavier. It was a foolish response that God used to fulfill his word. God allowed this turn of events to discipline his people.
2. A divided people (16-19)
All Israel resented Rehoboam's response. The people went home and split along tribal lines. Judah and Benjamin (11:1) remained loyal to the line of David while the other tribes formed their own nation. Division and rebellion always result when leaders do not humble themselves. Israel remained divided until they were taken into captivity. We must pray for wise and humble leaders.
Application: Lord, you allow division and pain to discipline your proud people. Help us to humbly accept and obey your word and heed wise counsel.
One Word: Humble yourselves before the Lord
