1. Love God with all that you are (1-5)
Fearing God, keeping his commands and carefully obeying him are all ways of loving God. 'Hear' ('shema' in Hebrew) is a sacred verse to Jews called The Shema. God is one. God is the LORD who brought them out of Egypt. It is this God whom his people are to love with all their heart, soul and strength. Jesus said this is the most important commandment (Mk 12:29-30). Why? Because if we don't love God, we naturally give our hearts to love something or someone else.
2. Keep God's words close to your heart (6-9)
Many Jewish homes have verses 4-9 in a small doorframe box called a mezuzah (9). It's a reminder to keep God's words nearby. We are to talk about God's word anywhere, any time. Why? Because we are forgetful, and we are easily distracted. Also, meditating on and discussing God's word can and should be our joy and inspiration for living.
Application: Lord, I love you. Help me to love you more.
One Word: Love God with my all
