1. A misunderstanding leads to war (1-9)
After Nahash king of the Ammonites died, David sent a delegation to offer condolences. The Ammonites misread David’s intentions. They completely humiliated David’s envoys. King David was greatly angered and intended to pay them back. The Ammonites hired a huge army of chariots from the Arameans to defend themselves. Joab led the entire Israelite army out to fight. God was using political struggles to fulfill his will. (17:9,10)
2. The Israelites respond with courage (10-19)
The Israelites seemed trapped with enemies in front and back. Defeat seemed certain. Joab divided the army, some under his charge, the rest under his brother. In that dire situation, Joab encouraged the Israelites to be strong, to fight bravely and to entrust the result to the LORD. The Arameans fled before the Israelites. They tried to regroup but David led the Israelites into battle and completely defeated them. Then peace came.
Application: Lord, help me to be strong and fight against fear with faith. Help me to trust you no matter how grim my circumstances may feel.
