1. David’s plan and God’s plan (1-10a)
King David wanted to build a temple for the LORD because the ark was housed in a tent. (16:1) But the LORD had a different plan. God would not allow David to build a temple. The LORD Almighty told Nathan to remind David that God himself had led David’s life until then. From the pastures to the throne, God had shepherded David every step of the way. God had removed David’s enemies. God would make him great, give his people their own home and give them peace. God’s kingdom plan was much greater than David’s temple plan.
2. A dynasty, a temple and an eternal kingdom (10b-15)
God’s plan extended beyond David’s lifetime. David wanted to build an earthly house for God, but God would build a house for David. The LORD promised to establish a kingdom through David’s line. David’s son Solomon would build the first temple. David’s descendent, Jesus Christ, would build a permanent temple through his death and resurrection. Jesus’ kingdom would be established forever.
Application: Father, thank you for our eternal King Jesus and your love. Help me to accept your plans for my life.
One Word: God’s plans are better than mine
