1. His heart will be set against the holy covenant (28-35)
The kings of the world did more than just fight with each other. They would also set themselves up against the holy covenant. They would desecrate the temple fortresses, setting up the abomination that causes desolation. Those who know their God will resist, and the wise would be refined by God, purified and spotless.
2. against the God of gods (36-45)
The kings of the earth exalt themselves, maligning God himself. They wage war against God's Beautiful Land and his people. But God is in control. Although the strongest of kings rage against God and his holy mountain, the Lord will prevail. Those who oppose him will come to an end with no one to help them. God is the help for the wise, who hold on to him in times of trouble.
