1. Terrifying boat ride (22-24a)
Jesus directed his disciples to take one of many boat trips across the Sea of Galilee. Jesus went to sleep while the disciples managed the boat, fully entrusting himself to God. Then, a squall (a sudden, violent storm) overtook them. The boat was in great danger, and the disciples woke Jesus in a panic, crying for him to save them. To their credit, they had instinctive trust in Jesus' power. But they let fear overpower them.
2. Jesus' command and question (24b-25)
Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and waters, and it immediately became calm. But Jesus wanted to know where his disciples' faith was. He expected them to grow courageous through trust in God, so that they could reveal God's glory in times of crisis. When we know Jesus is Creator God and ruler of nature, we have nothing to fear.
