1. The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath (1-5)
On one Sabbath Jesus and his disciples were spotted by some Pharisees as they picked some grain to eat. These Pharisees were like the Sabbath police. They accused the disciples of doing something unlawful-harvesting grain. Jesus reminded them of a time when King David, who they had to admire, did something unlawful. But David depended on the Lord, who he loved. In the same way Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. When we are ruled by him, we are free.
2. To save life (6-11)
On another Sabbath Jesus was teaching in a synagogue where there was a man with a shriveled hand. The Pharisees only saw the opportunity to accuse Jesus. Jesus healed the man in front of everyone. He confronted them by asking, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath?" They wanted to destroy Jesus, while he wanted to give life and healing. He is truly Lord of the Sabbath. He bore their fury to death in order to save one man.
