1. "Surely this man was the Son of God!" (33-39)
Jesus suffered excruciating pain due to his crucifixion, but he cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" For Jesus this was the most painful thing. Those standing near were hoping for a miracle, but Jesus breathed his last. When he died the curtain of the temple that separated sinful men from the Holy God was torn in two. Even a hardened Gentile centurion proclaimed the crucified to be the Son of God. Jesus' death brings life to the world.
2. The burial of Jesus (40-47)
The women who had followed Jesus continued to care for him. It was Joseph of Arimathea however who provided for Jesus' burial. Though he was a member of the Council that conspired against Jesus, he now stepped forward and buried Jesus. He was waiting for the kingdom of God. He received it in the death of Jesus.
