1. The king of the Jews (1-5)
The Jewish leaders condemned Jesus, but they had no power to execute him. They brought him to Pilate and charged him with claiming to be king of the Jews. Jesus did not reply to their accusations. He is the king who bore their accusations on himself.
2. "Crucify him!" (6-15)
Pilate knew that the Jews were ruled by envy (10), but Pilate was ruled by his self-serving attitude. When he tried to compromise and free Jesus, he was thwarted. So he released a murderer and condemned an innocent man to death to serve his self-interest. Jesus was the king who was crucified at their hands.
