1. Music ministry for the LORD (1)
David appointed 3 prophesying ministers, and their relatives, who were all skilled musicians (7). These 3 men were "seers," that is, prophets. Asaph wrote 12 psalms (50,73-83). Jeduthun directed music for 3 psalms (39,62,77), and Heman for one (88). Their ministry was to thank and praise the LORD (3) in song based on God's word, which declares who God is, and what he has done, is doing and will do. They sang prayers and psalms to God, to glorify God and to build up God's people.
2. Supervised, trained and skilled musicians for the LORD (2-18)
The 3 seers had 24 sons who shared in this ministry (God gave Heman 14 sons who participated!). The 24 family leaders cast lots for their duties, whether they were young or old, teacher or student (8). For the music of the LORD's temple, King David supervised the 3 seers, who supervised their 24 sons, who supervised the 288 music servants of the LORD. They all worked together to worship God with thanks and praise.
