1. David's desire to do something for God (1-2)
When David compared his palace with God's ark in a tent, he felt bad. He wanted to do something for God. The prophet Nathan said, "Do it." But God had something else in mind.
2. The LORD's word to David (3-15)
God sent a message from Nathan to David. David was not to build a house for God. God never commanded that. God made David king, was with him, and cut off all his enemies. God would make David's name great and provide a place for his people. The LORD declared that he would build a house for David. David's offspring would build a house for the LORD, and the LORD would establish the throne of his kingdom forever. This was partially fulfilled when King Solomon built the temple. This was fully fulfilled through Jesus Christ whose kingdom is forever.
