1. Why God raised David as king (1-7)
Hiram king of Tyre made friends with David, sending fine materials and men to build a palace for him. David's family was blessed with many sons, both symbolic of an established kingdom. David knew these were the blessing and act of God, not his own efforts. David knew why God blessed him this way: So David would be a shepherd king to take care of God's people Israel.
2. David inquired of God (8-17)
David had much to do to care for God's people. God's enemies the Philistines continued to raid Israel. David was not afraid, nor was he confident in himself. He inquired of God, heard God's answer, and obeyed it carefully, just as he had done while running from Saul in his youth. David remained humble before God, and God exalted him, making every nation fear him.
