TO LIVE IN VICTORY OR DEFEAT?

Date : Mar 20, 2019
Passage : 2Kings 14:1~29
Keyverse : 27

1. Amaziah's victory and defeat (1-22)

Amaziah king of Judah did right in the LORD's eyes, but not like David. He followed his father's example. Like father, like son. They both became proud after success and blessing. Amaziah carried out justice according to the Law of Moses (5-6). He defeated the Edomites. But then he became arrogant and challenged Israel to battle. Israel's king Jehoash called him a little thistle and said, "Stay at home!" Amaziah's pride and idolatry brought defeat and ruin to himself and his people (2Ch 25:14ff). In times of success and blessing, don't get proud.

2. God uses an evil king (23-29)

Jeroboam II king of Israel did evil in the LORD's eyes, just like Jeroboam I over a century earlier. Nonetheless, God used him to restore Israel's boundaries and to save them from oppression. It was because God had not said he would blot out the name of Israel. God is so patient and merciful with evil kings and nations. But eventually, judgment will come to the unrepentant who do not worship God.

Application: Lord God, forgive my pride. Help me to repent and live humbly and fully for your glory.
One Word: Worship the LORD humbly and only
