1. Why the city has fallen (21-26)
In the 12th year of exile Zedekiah's rebellion (see 2 Kings 24-25) came to an end, and Jerusalem fell. Before news came to Ezekiel through a refugee, God already foretold its fall. They claimed God's promise to Abraham (24), but in reality trusted in their swords while doing detestable things. Should they possess the land? God's answer is clear.
2. God made the land desolate (27-33)
The Sovereign LORD says he will make the land desolate. Through this they will know he is the LORD. Their proud strength would come to an end because of all the detestable things they did. Why did this happen? They listened to the words of God but they did not put them into practice. This is a sober reminder for us to not only read God's word, but to listen and obey. God cannot be mocked (Gal 6:7).
