1. The young king seeks wise counsel (1-7)
Rehoboam went to Shechem for his inauguration. Jeroboam had returned from exile. Together with the whole assembly of Israel, Jeroboam asked for Rehoboam to lighten the load on the people. Much had been done during Solomon's reign but it had taken a heavy toll. The new king sought the advice of the elders who encouraged him to listen to the people. If Rehoboam served them for a day, he would win their hearts for a lifetime.
2. When pride gets in the way of wisdom (8-15)
Rehoboam rejected their advice and sought counsel from his young friends. His friends told him what he wanted to hear. They were all ambitious, proud and foolish. Rather than accept the advice of the elders and give the people what they wanted, Rehoboam spoke harshly to them. He decided to make their yoke even heavier. Youthful folly and pride would bring the downfall of a nation. God did this so that he would fulfill what he said to Solomon and Jeroboam.
