1. God's word when disaster loomed (1-9)
King Ahaz of Judah faced a potential national disaster. Aram and Israel had formed an alliance to attack Jerusalem. Ahaz and his people trembled with fear and dread. Then the LORD gave a message to Isaiah to give to the king. God promised that the invaders would not succeed. To God, Aram and Israel were nothing. But God also told Ahaz to stand firm in his faith or else he would not stand at all.
2. The sign of Immanuel (10-14)
God's promise was difficult to believe and he invited Ahaz to ask for a sign. But Ahaz, in his doubt, pride and foolishness, refused to ask for a sign. Isaiah told him that the LORD himself would give a sign anyway. The sign would be a virgin who would conceive and give birth to a son. The son would be called Immanuel which means God with us. This sign was fulfilled in Jesus (Mt 1:23). As God was with the people of Judah and saved them from invaders, so God saves us from our sins by being with us through Jesus.
