1. Step up and lead (1-4)
David knew that Solomon was young and inexperienced. He instructed his son to be strong, act like a man, and to be wholly committed to God. As a leader, Solomon would need courage. It was time for him to set aside childish, trivial matters and to protect and shepherd his people. Observing God's law would be the key factor for Solomon's success and David's legacy.
2. Dealing with others as king (5-12)
Joab and Shimei had caused trouble for David and were threats to Solomon. On the other hand, Barzillai had treated David well and Solomon was directed to reciprocate. The new king needed wisdom in all his dealings with people, both potential enemies and friends.
