JESUS, THE KING

Date : Sep 23, 2018
Passage : John 19:1~16
Keyverse : 5

1. King of the Jews (1-6)

Pilate found no guilt in Jesus as an insurrectionist as they charged against him as King of the Jews. Pilate thought if he severely punished Jesus making fun of him as one who is insane, he would be able to release him. But the Jewish leaders were determined to crucify him.

2. The Son of God (7-16)

The Jews gave another reason why Jesus must die according to their law: "He blasphemed God by claiming that he was the Son of God." Pilate was more afraid. He asked about Jesus' identity but Jesus was silent. When Pilate said he had authority to kill or save him, Jesus showed that all authorities come from God and the Jews who used their religious authority would be more severely punished by God. When Pilate tried once more to release Jesus, the Jews threw him a final blow, "You are no friend of Caesar, if you let this man go." Pilate gave in and turned Jesus to be crucified. He loved his security more than the truth. He feared Caesar more than God. He used God's authority for his own sake. He would be condemned forever for his coward and dishonest decision.

Application: Thank you, Jesus, for using your authority as King and the Son of God not for your sake but to save us.
