1. Judas betrays Jesus (1-3)
After Jesus finished praying, he and his disciples walked to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus often prayed with his disciples. He went there knowing Judas would come with soldiers and he would be arrested. Jesus went to the Garden in order to drink the cup of suffering his Father had given him. Judas came to him with a detachment of soldiers carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
2. "I am he" (4-11)
Jesus was in control of the situation. He approached the soldiers and asked who they wanted. When they said, "Jesus of Nazareth," Jesus said, "I am he." And the soldiers fell to the ground in awe. Again, Jesus asked who they wanted and said, "I am he." Jesus also protected his disciples, fulfilling Scripture. When Peter drew a sword to protect Jesus, Jesus told him to put it away, saying, "Shall I not drink the cup my Father has given me?" The cup his Father gave him was the cup of suffering and death. Jesus took it willingly for each of us.
