1. Jesus was returning to God (1-5)
It was just before the Passover. Jesus would be arrested that very night. He knew what was going to happen to him. He knew it was time to leave this world and go back to his Father. He also knew the Father had put all things under his sovereignty (3). He knew all things. So, what did he do with what he knew to be his last hours? He did what he did throughout his whole life. He loved. He loved his disciples from the beginning, and he would love them to the very end. Jesus shows a perfect example of his love. He got up from the meal, prepared himself, and began to wash his disciples' feet.
2. Peter objects, Jesus loves (6-11)
Peter admonished Jesus, telling him he was not going to wash his feet. But Jesus told Peter he didn't understand and that if he didn't wash him, Peter could have no part with him. Peter then jumped in and wanted Jesus to wash his whole body! But Peter was already clean. Because of Jesus we are clean, but here Jesus showed that we need Jesus' love continually.
