1. Saul and Jonathan die in battle (1-7)
As foretold, the Philistines won the battle against Saul and Israel. Jonathan died. Saul was wounded critically. When his armor-bearer would not kill him, Saul fell on his own sword to die. Saul and his 3 sons died on that same day. Many Israelites fled and the Philistines occupied their towns.
2. Valiant men of Jabesh Gilead (8-13)
The Philistines pinned Saul's body to a wall and praised their idols for the victory. When the people of Jabesh Gilead heard this news, all their valiant men went and recovered the bodies of Saul and his sons, burned and buried them. They risked their lives to honor the memory of the one who had rallied Israel to deliver them from the oppressive Ammonites (11:1-11). They fasted 7 days in honor of Saul, their king and hero.
