1. Quiet truth verses bold lies (1-11)
Here we see the difference between the loud lies of a false prophet and the quiet, solid truth of God's word. Hananiah was saying that the exiles would return in two years. His words were popular, but lies. Jeremiah remained quiet and prayerful, waiting on God to deliver prophetic words to counter Hananiah's lies and reveal God's truth. Jeremiah could only say, "Amen! I hope that all you are saying is true." Hananiah was self-deceived.
2. Evading God only makes things worse (12-17)
Jeremiah's message contradicted Hananiah's. Hananiah was upset and broke Jeremiah's wooden yoke. But Jeremiah declared that anyone who would not submit to the Babylonians would be inviting an iron yoke on themselves. When God's word tells us to repent, submit and trust we must obey. Anything else brings more and more suffering.
