1. Jesus goes to Lazarus' tomb (28-37)
Martha told her sister Mary that Jesus had arrived. Mary ran out to meet Jesus who had not yet entered the village. A crowd of mourners followed. Mary fell at Jesus' feet and repeated what Martha had said. She thought that if Jesus had been there, Lazarus would not have died. Mary and the crowd were overcome with grief. Jesus was deeply troubled and asked to go to the tomb. Jesus wept with the mourners, understanding their sorrow. But some were bitter that Jesus had not prevented this death.
2. The dead man came out (38-44)
Jesus took charge of the situation. He told people to remove the stone. Martha reminded Jesus of the bad odor, but Jesus challenged her to put her faith in him. Believing Jesus is the starting point of seeing God's glory. With this word, the people removed the stone. Then Jesus prayed so that those standing there would believe that what came next was from God. Jesus called out, "Lazarus, come out." Then Lazarus walked out of the tomb. Jesus had raised a dead man back to life!
