1. If God were your Father (37-47)
The Jews traced their human lineage back to Abraham. They claimed to be Abraham's children, and, on this basis, they claimed to be God's children too. Our ancestry may be meaningful in earthly relationships but a relationship with God depends on how we respond to his Son Jesus Christ. If we reject his word, we reject the truth and we reject Jesus. We become children of the devil. However, when we love Jesus, hold to his word, and obey him, we are God's children.
2. Obey Jesus' word and never taste death (48-59)
Jesus offended the Jews by speaking the truth. They accused him of being demon-possessed. Jesus did not respond in kind. He told them that whoever obeys his word would never see death. Jesus' claim meant he was greater than anyone, including Abraham. Abraham died. He could not give eternal life. He looked forward to Jesus who gives eternal life to all who believe in him. Jesus can do this because he pre-dated Abraham. Jesus is "I am." (Ex 3:14) Jesus is the eternal God.
