1. Living water (37-39)
During each day of the festival, a pitcher of water was drawn from the pool of Siloam and poured out on the temple altar as an offering before God. During the ceremony, Isaiah 12:3 was recited: "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation." God promised that one day his people could come and freely drink the waters of salvation. And now that day had come! Jesus stood and cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink." Whoever confesses their sin and puts their faith in Jesus drinks from these waters of salvation. Even more, Jesus says that "rivers of living water will flow from within them." He promises to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who believes in him. The Spirit's power and presence are like overflowing streams that cannot be contained as believers witness to others and live for Christ.
2. A variety of responses (40-52)
Some of those who heard Jesus' words acknowledged him as the Messiah. Some were still searching for the truth while others were confused and didn't know what to do. The religious leaders, however, were persistent in their unbelief and indignant with those who were moved by Jesus' words. In spite of all this turmoil, our Lord's offer of salvation is clear and true.
