1. The truth about the resurrection (27-40)
Whose wife will she be? The Sadducees approached Jesus with a question that was intended to reveal the folly of believing in the resurrection. Jesus' response was stunning and full of hope for those who believe in him. He described the facts about the age to come. The redeemed in Christ will no longer be joined in marriage, but will live like the angels. They will live as holy, eternal children of God. The image Jesus creates is full of wonder and it gives us hope and courage. It leads us to live for His kingdom instead of the things of the world. The Sadducees based their teaching solely on the books of the Pentateuch. But even there, as Jesus pointed out, the truth of the resurrection is declared. God is indeed the God of the living!
2. Second, David's son and Lord (41-44)
Jesus posed a question of his own to the teachers of the law. How could the Messiah be David's son and Lord? It is because of the Messiah's resurrection! Jesus was born as a physical descendent of David, and through his death and resurrection, he was made Lord. Peter says in Acts, "God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." The Word of God teaches us that the resurrection is true.
