1. Jesus' authority (1-8)
Who gave Jesus the authority to clear the temple and teach the people? The religious leaders demanded an answer! If only they had listened to Jesus' teaching and accepted the good news he proclaimed, they would have realized that his authority was from God. The real question was whether or not the religious leaders would seek the truth. Although they rejected John's baptism, they were afraid to admit it because the people recognized John as a prophet of God. They refused to take a stand because they valued their positions more than the truth. Unlike the religious leaders, those who earnestly seek the truth will find Jesus and rejoice in His authority.
2. The parable of the tenants (9-18)
Like the tenants in Jesus' parable, the religious leaders rejected the authority of God. Seeking the fruit of repentance, God sent numerous prophets to Israel, but they were mistreated and even martyred. And now, God had sent his beloved Son to them, but the leaders were planning to kill him as well. However, God's authority will not be denied. Although he was rejected by the leaders, Jesus has become the cornerstone of God's kingdom. Anyone who rejects him will be broken and crushed in judgment.
