1. Paul gives Timothy his final charge (1-8)
Paul was convinced he was about to be martyred. He knew he was about to receive a crown of righteousness, as will all who long for Jesus. So Paul urgently gave Timothy this final charge. "Preach the word." As God's servants, this is our highest calling. We should be ready in season and out of season. We should be prepared at any and all times to speak words of encouragement, or of correction or of rebuke. But it shouldn't be done haphazardly. Rather, it should be done in great patience and with the goal to instruct and bring to repentance.
2. Come quickly (9-22)
Paul urges Timothy to come to him quickly, as he didn't know when the end would come. He wanted him to bring his cloak and his scrolls (Bible material?) and to bring his servant Mark. Everyone else had deserted him. But Paul wasn't sad. Rather, he could only give glory to God for ever and ever.
