1. Because of wanton lust (1-7)
The Assyrian Empire is a representative of the rapacious greed of militaristic nations, hungry for more power and more wealth. Such nations have risen to plague the earth since the dawn of history. Nineveh is compared to a harlot who seduces and enslaves men by prostitution and witchcraft. The Lord Almighty is against these things, and he is against Nineveh. He will bring about her fall. He will turn her glory into shame.
2. Are you better than Thebes? (8-19)
Thebes, a powerful and beautiful Egyptian city, situated on both banks of the Nile, was destroyed by the Assyrians in 663 B.C. Now it was Nineveh's turn. She would be like a field stripped by locusts. She would fall, never to rise again. Those whom she had oppressed would rejoice.
Application: Lord, help me not to be fooled by the temptations of wealth and power and pleasure. Let me remain as a part of your remnant people.
One Word: Stay with the Lord Almighty
