First, the purpose of the law (15-22). If a human covenant cannot be set aside, how much more binding is God's covenant. God established a covenant with Abraham. God gave Abraham promises. The law did not set aside the covenant nor the promises. Rather the law was given to reveal the depth and breadth of our sinfulness and separation from God. The law cannot impart life; only God's promise, fulfilled through Jesus, can give life. Second, those who belong to Christ (23-29). The law was meant to prepare humankind to receive Jesus. The law was like a guardian until Christ came. After Christ came, those who believe in him no longer need this guardian. Human distinctions make no difference. Christ came for all, fulfilling God's promise to Abraham. All those who believe in Jesus by faith are the children of God.
Application: Lord, thank you for making me your child through faith in Jesus. Help me to see others through the eyes of faith.
One Word: God's children in Christ
